Define the remote FAT before the machine is built
A remote factory acceptance test (FAT) should be planned as part of the project specification, not improvised on the day of a video call. The buyer and supplier should agree which product versions, screws, fastening positions, quality signals, operating steps, and interface conditions will be demonstrated.
The purpose is to create a shared record of what has been tested before shipment. It is not a substitute for every possible on-site check; safety, installation, line interfaces, and project scope may still require local verification.
Prepare production-intent samples and screws
- Use representative workpieces, including model variants and normal tolerance differences when available.
- Use the actual screw types, lengths, head shapes, surface conditions, and packaging method intended for production.
- Share the fastening layout, access directions, target tightening conditions, and known defect concerns before the test.
- Record any sample or screw limitation that prevents a full production-equivalent test.
Stream the evidence that a buyer needs to see
A useful remote FAT combines a live video view with saved evidence. The camera should show product loading, fixture positioning, screw presentation, driver movement, tightening results, alarms, recovery steps, and the operator interface. If several axes or stations are involved, each relevant motion and process handoff should be identified clearly.
Where the equipment supports it, provide tightening records, inspection results, cycle observations, recipe screens, and sample outputs in a shared folder or project record. Evidence should be labelled by product model and test condition so that open questions can be traced later.
Test the complete process, not only a successful cycle
- Run repeated cycles with production-intent samples rather than showing one successful fastening.
- Check missing-screw, floating-screw, feeding, product-presence, and misplacement responses when those functions are in scope.
- Review model changeover, recipe selection, bit replacement, feeder replenishment, alarm reset, and operator access.
- Confirm the required PLC, barcode, MES, data export, safety, or upstream/downstream interface behavior.
- Capture deviations, responsible owners, evidence needed for closure, and the agreed next test.
Close the FAT with a signed action record
The final remote FAT record should separate passed checks, conditional checks, open issues, and items reserved for installation or site commissioning. Photos, videos, data files, and screen recordings should use consistent filenames and reference the relevant checklist item.
For overseas projects, the handover package can also include wiring and pneumatic diagrams, operating instructions, spare-parts information, installation assumptions, and a remote support contact path. A clear record reduces the chance that a video demonstration is mistaken for full project acceptance.
