Torque Control and Traceability in Screw Fastening Automation

Torque control and traceability help factories reduce quality risk, especially in electronics, automotive parts, medical devices, appliances, and export-oriented assembly.

Why torque control matters

In manual screwdriving, the operator often judges tightening quality by feeling, sound, or visual inspection. This may be acceptable for simple products, but it becomes risky when products require stable assembly force, consistent sealing, electrical reliability, or customer audit records.

Automatic screw fastening with torque control helps reduce under-tightening, over-tightening, stripped threads, cracked plastic posts, and unstable product quality. It also makes the process easier to standardize across shifts and operators.

Different levels of torque management

  • Basic electric screwdriver control for simple repeatable tightening.
  • Torque monitoring with OK/NG judgment for quality alarms.
  • Servo tightening for more precise torque, angle, and process control.
  • Barcode-linked data recording for product-level traceability.
  • MES or factory system connection for production data management.

When traceability becomes important

Traceability is especially valuable when a factory supplies automotive parts, medical devices, power products, electronics, smart home devices, or export customers with strict quality requirements. If a product fails later, the factory needs to know whether each screw position was actually tightened within the required range.

Traceability does not always mean a complex MES project. For some factories, simple data output, alarm records, or barcode-linked screw results are already a useful step toward better process control.

Data points commonly recorded

  • Product barcode or fixture ID.
  • Screw position number and tightening sequence.
  • Torque result and OK/NG judgment.
  • Angle, depth, or tightening time when required.
  • Operator, shift, timestamp, and machine alarm information.

Design the quality standard before machine design

The required torque range, detection method, alarm logic, data format, and NG handling method should be discussed before machine design. Adding traceability after the equipment is finished can be more difficult and may increase project cost.

A good automation proposal should connect mechanical design, fixture positioning, screwdriver selection, control system, and quality logic into one complete process.

Do all screw locking machines need servo torque control?

No. Basic torque control may be enough for simple products. Servo tightening is more suitable when torque accuracy, angle control, data recording, or strict customer audit requirements are important.

Can screw fastening data be exported?

Yes. Depending on the control system, data can often be exported locally or connected to factory systems. The required format should be confirmed during the project evaluation stage.
